Default Oily Elderberry

Thanks, Van. That makes me feel a lot better. I suspected that it was ok, and that it will rack and filter out.

Elderberries contain a waxy like substance, so this sounds about right. As
far as what it does to the wine, I'm not sure, but I know several people
who've made elderberry wine, and all have reported similar characteristics.

I have a couple of batches of wild elderberry wine that just went into
secondary fermentation. While racking, I noticed that the must was very
oily, and that it coated my spoon, wine thief hydrometer, etc with a slick
film. When wiped off, it was slightly yellowish, like a vegetable oil. It
does not have much of a taste and the wine seems ok. This is my first time
with wild elderberries, so I don't know if this is normal. Is it?
