I could tell you about the time my future BIL, living in a share house,
bought a load of green potatoes. The greengrocer told him they needed to
ripen! As for keeping lettuce fresh, there were always vegetables lying
about the place rotting because somebody had bought them on impulse and
then didn't know what to do with them. They mostly lived on takeaway, or
ate out at greasy spoons.

When I was a student I lived at home with my mother, the only sensible
thing to do.
