I guess I'm showing my age, but I really believe that mandatory courtesy
is better than no courtesy at all, and being required to perform
specific acts of courtesy often leads to real care and concern when it
is needed.

Being required to treat the customer as a human being reminds the good
clerk that he/she is dealing with real people, not just numbers.
