They are generally harmless and docile creatures, nonaggressive, and good to
have around. They are good for eating snails and other pests, or decaying
fruit that has dropped off the tree. There is rarely any problem interacting
with cats and dogs, although the dog might attack the possum.

And unlike much wildlife, the body temperature is so low that rabies is
virtually unknown.

I always put out my cats' rejected food and enjoy watching the neighborhood
possums who come around at night.
