Default West Indian bread

Years ago, whe I lived in north London, there were a number of local
bakeries that made West Indian bread. I suppose the shape was something
similar to a sandwich loaf. The big difference, however, was in the
taste and the texture. The taste was a little sweet, as if it had a fair
big of sugar in it. But the amazing thing was the texture - it was
velvety on your tongue. A very fine crumb, that was soft and well, velvety.

So the question is, does anyone have a tried and true recipe for West
Indian white bread? If so, would you care to share it?
