It's called geophagy, which is a subcategory of pica. Pica is a disease
categorized by eating inappropriate objects and material. Haiti isn't
the only place it is practiced - it occurs in the US among certain
ethnic groups, it occurs in Africa, it was practiced by native
Americans. It is an attempt to ingest needed minerals.
