Funny you should mention that. The author specifically tried to avoid
them because he wanted to make everything from scratch. But he
couldn't get anything to come out as good as the canned fried onions.
Even with all the added work of dredging and frying. So he conceded
by mixing them with bread crumbs.

My wife claims to hate mushroom, and she didn't even pick them out,
this dish was so good.
