I have to agree with everything you've said. Starting with the racing
carnival, Melbourne is one continuous party from the beginning of
November right through to New Year's Eve. You have to be a bit careful
eating out, because everybody is having functions, and no restaurant
ever refuses a booking just be cause they can't cope.

That would make an interesting thread - memorably awful works Christmas
bunfights. Inedible food arrives after three hours by which time half
the party are drunk and the social secretary is in tears...
