It's never failed yet. It was a new fiberglass tank when we moved in.
I HAVE seen the crystaline crust floating on top of the waste when
they've come to vacuum the tank. It does destroy the working bacteria,
slowing down the process if not kept in check.
Overcautious? Perhaps. It's cheaper to eat on paper and wash my whites at
the laundromat with chlorox rather than dig up the ceptic system and
field for replacing.
