My last two dogs didn't take to dens. They wanted to be where the
humans were no matter what. They slept next to the bed, not under it.
I'd heard of fixing up crates for dogs but never took it seriously with
those two. Cubbe has a thing for enclosed spaces. Even before she
tried scrunching under the futon 10 days after we first got her home
from the
shelter, she was under the dining room table. With that in mind, I got
her a nice crate and figured she'd love it. We fixed it up with all the
trimmings-- a pillow, blanket, etc. She'd go in it for a few seconds
when we taught her to (i.e. rewarded her for doing so) but otherwise
ignored it. Now we use the crate for transporting her in the car.

I love labs too, but Cubbe isn't one. I don't have a picture of her
standing, but if you could see her back legs, you'd see that she almost
has to be half Chow Chow. A straight on picture of her face would show
that she looks like a bear cub (thus the name Cubbe), which is, again,
almost certainly Chow Chow. Her other half is something smaller, less
furry, and boxier shaped than a Chow, or maybe some hound given her
hunting abilities and hunting "bay" sound.

The picture of the futon doesn't show it accurately. It's one of those
fold out jobs where it can be a couch or a bed so the wooden piece that
you see is part of its structure. Once underneath and curled up, she
has about 4" clearance of her back to bottom of the futon.
