Kraft Foods markets a product called "Kraft Dips Guacamole." A lawsuit
has been filed seeking to enjoin them from using the word "guacamole"
because the product contains less than 2% avocado.
Instead it is made from modified food starch, coconut and soybean oils,
corn syrup and green food coloring (or whatever combination makes
green). Turns out that there are no regulatory standards for
guacamole, unlike, say, peanut butter, which has to be 95% peanuts.
Kraft says. ""We think customers understand that it isn't made from
avocado." They don't say why they have such a high opinion of their
customers. Nevertheless, they say they will relabel the product.
On the one hand it's not deceptive because the ingredients label is as
accurate as the law requires. On the other, many of us think that if
it says "guacamole" it oughta be mostly avocado. -aem
