It's an indian curry dish. I actually haven't made up my mind which one I
want to make. Doesn't say anything about opening and seeding the pods.
Just says "add cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon, and cook until the spices are
slightly puffed and begin to brown, about 5 minutes. It's a Julie Sahni
book, _Classic Indian Cooking_.
