As I recall reading, the "57 varieties" comes from the early
days of the Heinz company and was chosen because Mr. Heinz
thought it sounded good not because it bore any real
relationship to the actual number :-) It seems a good number;
remember "The Manchurian Candidate", where over breakfast it was
decided after contemplating the ketchup bottle that there were
57 communists in the State Depatment.
