You are dating yourself. Responsible surgeons use the least risky
anesthesia possible. Why would an appendectomy using a spinal (more
likely epidural) be any worse than having a c-section using one. That is
the standard, y'know? Heck, nowadays that appy is done laproscopically
more often than not. The recovery time for the patient is lessened, as
well as the risks.
