They appeared to have achieved it - their own business and both children at
university.

And last night, like the rest of the world, their old neighbours in South
Korea were stunned by the bloody and sudden end to their dream.

The family lived a modest and quiet life in their home country, with Cho
remembered as a devoted "mummy's boy".

One former neighbour in the depressed dormitory town outside Seoul where
they lived said last night: "The family was pretty quiet and very modest in
their behaviour and in their means.

"The little boy and girl were well behaved but what was particularly
noticeable was the control the mother kept the boy under.

"He used to follow her around the whole time and was never away from her."

During their last two years in South Korea, the family rented a two-bedroom
flat from widowed Lim Bong-Ae.

Mrs Lim said last night: "I don't know what Cho's father did for a living
but they lived a poor life.

"When they emigrated, Cho's father said they were going to America because
it was difficult here."

A local shopkeeper, watching TV coverage of the atrocity in Virginia, said:
"I remember the family but only really remember the mother and the bright
little girl.

"It's obvious to everyone here, though, that the boy must have become very
American in his mentality.

"Shooting and killing is not the Korean way."
