How did Rachael Ray get her own show?

Demographics. Networks (in the US, anyway) now know that "mediocre"
is the way to go to get a big fanbase. Look at American Idol. No one
talented or good looking ever wins. People are put-off by talented,
good-looking people. Look at the disdain people have for a Lindsay
Lohan or an Angelina Jolie (all of it is based on envy and jealousy-
nevertheless, it is there).
Rachel Ray has a lot of personality, but she's sloppy-looking and not
really a good chef. This makes her a demographic home run.
You will always have a lot more Americans identifying with (and
liking) her than a hot, thin chick who actually studied haute cuisine.
