"Everything" is overgeneralizing, of course. But the higher real
estate and labor costs seep into many, many products.

After I wrote that, I saw the gas prices here -- $3.75 for regular.
(it's $3.39 at the ARco in san Mateo, less across the bridge). Then,
I saw the prices for produce. The quality of California's is far
superior, and cheaper for the most part.
I am not sure when (or why) gas prices here surpassed those in CA, but
it must have been since last summer when I was here last.
