Cheese steaks were around for a couple of decades before Cheez Whiz®
came out. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak
I remember in high school, seeing a movie where natives in S. America
wrapped grub worms in banana leaves, cooked them, then unrolled the
leaves and happily ate the grubs. That was *authentic* too.
Also, even though *I* wouldn't eat jarred mayo, I see nothing wrong
with using it as a condiment on a sandwich *you* are about to eat.
Using it in a recipe is pushing it. Slathering it on a foot long+
sandwich destined to be eaten by a bunch of people at some later time
is just crappy. No condiment should be put on ahead of time.
