Actually, I do smoke sometimes (bourbon seems to promote it). But, I never
smoke indoors, and if I'm in my car, the window MUST be opened. Smoking is
now banned in public places in NY, but before that, I'd never eat in a place
where people were likely to be smoking. It was actually pretty rare in
decent restaurants, and more likely in bars that served food.
Around 1970, when I was 17, my family was in a restaurant and some guy lit
up a cigar when we were still eating. Twice, my dad politely asked him to
put it out. Twice, the guy refused. Finally, my dad got up, grabbed it out
of his hand, and put it in the guy's cup of coffee. The guy left. That's
pretty much my take on smoking around other people.
