Diesel engines are more expensive to produce than gasoline engines.
Diesel fuel is more expensive because there have been a number of staged
requirements that have gone into effect to reduce emissions mostly
related to the amount of sulfur in the fuel. It costs more to remove the
sulfur and since sulfur also performs other functions more expensive
additives need to be added to compensate.
