I would like to get in touch with an expert in Japanese cuisine expert
to do a fan commentary track for one of my favorite movies.

(If you don't know what they are, a fan commentary track is where one
or more people record an mp3 while watching a movie that can be played
back by other people while watching the movie.)

I'm interested in doing a fan commentary track for Juzo Itami's movie
_Tampopo_, a comedy that uses the story of a young widow struggling to
keep her ramen noodle business going as a device to examine how food
and other aspects of Japanese culture are intertwined. I would like
to talk about certain aspects of the movie's cinematography, the
actors, relationships to other movies--but I realized that I know next
to nothing about all the various food dishes prepared over the course
of the movie.

So, I am looking for someone who knows all about those dishes and can
discuss the film with me on the commentary track. Not only would it
make a great commentary, but I would be able to satisfy my own
curiosity about some of those dishes.

The process I am envisioning is that you (the Japanese cuisine expert)
would watch the movie once or twice (if you haven't already) to
prepare (perhaps taking notes about what you will say at particular
scenes). Then we would arrange a time when I would call you on Skype
(either to Skype on your computer, or to your regular phone, whichever
is easier) and we would start the movie playing in our respective
locations at exactly the same time and talk about it. I would record
the call, then upload the completed commentary to one of the fan
commentary sites so that people could download it and listen to it
with the movie.

Well, I wouldn't be making any money on it either. It's a fun/hobby
project, and I was hoping to find someone else who thought it might be
fun enough to discuss these topics to give it a shot.

Which beats the availability of the DVD. Most irksome: They haven't
released it on DVD, which is amazing when you ponder how popular the
movie has been over the years. They also haven't released his "Taxing
Woman" movies, nor "The Funeral". These movies are great and were at
one time available with English subtitles on VHS. I don't know what the
problem is.

Coincidentally, just last night, I watched a Japanese movie which is
also completely unavailable: The Makioka Sisters ('83) last night on
VHS tape from Facets. It's got a big ol' label on it that says "This
Tape is out of print, if you lose it we'll charge you $250." Yikes.

Anyway I noted in the cast and credits the name "Juzo Itami" and
though, I know that name, who is that guy? Now I remember...

Oops. Did a bit more research and find I was a confused. While it's
true that Netflix inexplicably has no interest in Juzo Itami, I find
through Facets that there are extant versions on DVD of Taxing Woman, A
Taxing Woman Returns, Makioka Sisters (purchase only--no rental), and
The Funeral. Though not Minbo (Gentle Art of Extortion), which was the
impetus for yakuza to slash Itami in '94.

and "Tampopo" is available on DVD from Amazon, though it only came out in
2005.
(I think there was also a rare DVD version before that, that came into and
out of print very quickly. Or I may be thinking of another film.)

It peeves me that "Living on Tokyo Time", a very fun Japanese-American film,
never came out on DVD.
