Default Fenugreek age?

Does fenugreek lose potency over time? I have a bag of it that I
stored some time ago in a screw-top jar because the aroma was
overpowering. Needed it this week and upon opening, there was
virtually no scent. I don't have a cold. :-) *Very* disappointing, as
I know no local source for this spice.

It is whole seeds. In fact, I sprouted some once. May try that again
to test 'viability.'
