My little sis says the best Sichuan in New York is in Flushing, a place
called Spicy and Tasty.

Someone asked recently about Manhattan Asian places. This place isn't in
Manhattan, but just thought I'd pass the word.

Spicy and Tasty is at 39-07 Prince Street. They attracted a very positive
review from the NY Times reviewer Eric Asimov (and yes, I believe he is
Isaac Asimov's son) in particularly for their tea-smoked duck. I haven't
been there yet but have placed in my list of places to eat over the next few
weeks.

The Golden Monkey (133-47 Roosevelt Avenue) is also very good. It's a
walk-down across from a NYCHA complex. They were reviewed in Flavor and
Fortune http://www.flavorandfortune.com some time ago.

BTW I think Peter mentioned the Golden Monkey some months ago in a report on
NYC restaurants.

Spicy and Tasty is mentioned again in yesterday's (Sunday May 30) Sunday NY
Times "City Section." Anytime the mention a restaurant in Flushing it's a
bit of an event given how Manhattan-centric the paper is about restaurant
reviews.

I haven't been to Spicy and Tasty yet, but if all goes well, will this
weekend.

Almost everything in downtown Flushing is within a five minute walk of the
Main Street/Flushing #7 subway stop or the Main Street station of the LIRR.

Prince Street is a north turn off Northern Blvd just east of the
Whitestone Expressway.

Hey Warren,

Yes, I did indeed mention Golden Monkey in that report. So have you tried
out Spicy and Tasty yet? I'm pretty sure I'll be visiting my little sis in
NYC in August, and I'll be sure to give it a try.

PS. ¡Compadres! Just got back last night from a whole month in Mexico!
Awesome trip. Took Spanish classes for four straight weeks, and went out
dancing, drinking, and meeting chicas on the weekends. Never took salsa
lessons, but there I was doing my best with the chavas. I think I'll need
to take salsa lessons here in the States to prepare me better for my next
trip. As for food pics, I was only able to take a few. Well, but Rona is
not here any more to tease me about it, so I guess it is ok. Hope everyone
here has been doing fine.

Hola, compañero! Good ta see ya back! Sounds like ya had a great time! I'd
be jealous, except I'm leaving for 3 months in Thailand next week! I
anticipate no computer access there. Some pics and a report in October.

Aha!!! I just recently discovered (just two days ago, in fact), that my
ISP's newest news server carries afa and so I'm back! A timely return, I
think...

So for the oh so few pictures you have...where will they be posted? I now
also get abf but it takes such a long time to download with dial-up that I
don't bother with it anymore. It's a shame, since I know some very good
food shots get posted there!

Now, if you're interested in some food pictures (since you have none ;-)) I
have many new Japanese ones up at
http://community.webshots.com/user/prasantrin . Foie gras yakitori...the
ultimate in fusion! (The picture's a little blurry, though.) And check out
the steak in the barbeque album. Mmmmm, I still dream of it...

Hi Rona, good ta see ya back! I have dialup, too (56k modem), and get a.b.f
OK. If your ISP supports it, you might look into a faster modem. I don't
miss my old 330 bps 'modem' at all!

Thanks! Google Groups was the s**** for afa. It rarely seems to archive
afa posts.

I have a 56K modem, too. It takes about 3-5 minutes to download one picture
and, given that I only have 8 hours of dial-up access/month (I have
broadband, too, but dial-up is only for Usenet), it's just not worth it. I
tried downloading just headers and then selecting specific posts to download
later, but it was annoying to download what I thought would be an
interesting food picture only to find a picture of a restaurant or a bottle
of beer. I still download headers, just in case something good comes up,
but I rarely download a full post.

3 to 5 minutes sucks. I get them in a few seconds. Maybe time loses
something in the translation. <g>

Expect some flack about the restaurants and BOTD's, since I cross-posted
this to a.b.f in the hopes that someone'll bail ya out so ya can post some
food pics from the Land of the Rising Sun!

Hey, amiga! Nice to see you back. Yes, I'd post them on abf. But the best
photos I took I already posted there, the pics I took 2 years ago. Did you
happen to catch them? They were of Chicken Mole Negro, tamales wrapped in
banana leaves, and chocolate.

Nice pics! Though, I'm not sure I would have taken a photo of frozen

Hey, gracias, caballero. And I am jealous of your trip to Thailand. I
haven't been there in like 10 years... But I can't talk with Thai chicas,
since I don't know Thai...

Looking forward to the pics!

I don't have any objections about those posts within the group, but it would
be nice if they were clearly labelled in the subject as such. Some of them
are, but most aren't. I think perhaps my ISP is just slow. Such is the
case with dial-up in Japan. DSL is fast, but for some reason, my broadband
ISP doesn't offer newsgroups. I do get cheap phone calls, though, so it's a
small price to pay :-).

When were they posted? I probably didn't get them. Any pictures posted
within the last 4-ish months were unseen by me. If you care to e-mail them
to me, I'll get them much faster via my e-mail than abf!

But did you see how thin the crust was? :-) You should see the picture of
my bulgogi pizza and my millefeuille pizza. Very interesting.

I still can't believe you didn't take many pictures! I'm off to Vienna,
Prague, and Budapest shortly and I'm going to pack my little digital with
food pictures. Scenery? What scenery?

I'm running at 24K (less than half of 56K) and the average,
properly sized picture takes about 40-50 seconds to load. So ya,
it must be slow.

I know what you mean about properly labeled pictures. I don't
download very many of the pictures unless they're clearly labeled
and something I might be interested in.

These guys said they were gonna pitch in and buy me a broadband
connection and a TiVo, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hmm. I posted them in March. I also posted a few Germany pics then. I
remember you commenting on my Franfurt trip, but maybe that was only to the
verbal report I gave here? Anyway, the Mexican food pics I posted then are
the best. I'll send them to you, though they are about 250 kb each. Is
that ok?

I'll post a few new ones to afb in a few days.

> I still can't believe you didn't take many pictures!

Several reasons. One, my camera is from 2002, so it's not that small and
not super light. I had Spanish class from 9:00-1:00 then a 2 hour break for
lunch. After classes, I was relieved to finally rid my shoulder bag of
textbook, notebook, dictionary, etc. I was relieved whenever I didn't have
a bag to carry. So usually for lunch, I left the bag in the hotel. And
often for lunch I just ate something quick, like a torta (Mexican sandwich),
since I usually had some other thing to take care of in the center of town.
In the evening, I also preferred not to carry around a heavy bag, and I also
tried to eat cheaper things like tacos or tortas.

Well, I guess those are kinda lame reasons. But I'll send you the pics I
posted befo I think they are really good.

I'm off to Vienna,

Looking foreward those pics, though I've been to all three places. When are

OK, I just shrunk them, so they are only about 100KB. I'll send them now.

I took a few nice pics in Germany too, if you are interested.

Peter:

Not yet, which mostly says something about how lazy I can be. I live about
a half-hour drive from Flushing but since I don't have a car I wait until
either I have business in the area (company car) or I'm going to a Mets game
to visit downtown Flushing. I'll probably doing some training at a
contractor's offices in Flushing soon. That's when I'll hit Spicy and Tasty.

If it's sufficiently wonderful that will help overcome my laziness and get
me to cajole friends with cars - or to just jump on the subway.

Oops. My sig is supposed to have a note to replace the .com with .ca but
when I switched servers, my default sig for Usenet got deleted. It's back
now, though! Even without shrinkage the pictures will probably get through
OK. Especially now that yahoo.ca allows 100MB per account! Sorry about
that!!

I'll be in Europe July 29-Aug. 11. If you have any recommendations for
those places, I'd much appreciate it! I'm hoping to eat cheaply, though
most recommendations I have received seem to be for more expensive places.
I'm splurging on Steirereck right at the beginning of our trip, so it's 10
Euro or less the rest of the trip! Perhaps it will be bread, cheese, and
sausages for us!

rona,
with your DSL account, you can get Teranews for a one time charge of $3.95, then
free after that. Teranews isn't perfect (sometimes it loses posts, sometimes
it's a couple of days behind) but the price is right.

Since my ISP's binaries are the pits, I use teranews most of the time.

No recommendations, except for Steirereck! Glad you are planning to go
there. It was hard for me to find cheap food in Vienna, btw. There was an
article recently in the NYT about really good Tafelspitz in Vienna. He said
the crucial thing is the cut of meat used, and he gave a recommendation for
a place that uses the right cut. Not sure if you are interested in boiled
beef, but Tafelspitz is a Vienenese intitution. I'll see if I can find that
article.
