Indian cooking - Pepper water paste

Hi my auntie has asked me to buy "pepper water paste" as she assures me it is used for Indian cooking.

Auntie lives in Canada and can no longer seem to find it in the local shops, I live in the UK but have never heard of this paste (which is used in Dhal dishes etc.).

Has anybody heard of this paste ?

Coming out of lurk mode for a moment...

I looked at the link given. It strikes me that this is this brand's name
for and literal translation of mulligitawny (soup), which is - what? -
Tamil for pepper water (milagu thanni). Otherwise, I have never heard of
this paste as a generic item used in Indian cooking - but apparently she has
used this specific product before for her cooking?

OK - back to lurk mode... Just trying to work this out in my head, if I had
been missing out all these years on a cooking method or ingredient...

You are probably right that it is just a pre-mixed spice for making
milagu thanni. The raj version would have been adapted beyond
recognition. Like most pre-mixed spices I imagine that Hathor's aunt
used it beyond its original intention.

Judy Bolton from sci.lang? I didn't know you read this group! Welcome!

I'm so sorry about the CD. Something came up, and the package I had ready
got lost under the clutter! Recently found it when I finally did some
needed cleaning...

Is the address still the same? If so, I'll send it right away.

Peter

Yes, that's the same person. I read here - usually lurking... I cook, too!
I don't just like the languages, I like the cooking of the people who speak
them!

You take your time with the CD - you are doing me the favor, and I am happy
to wait!

Hi thanks for that website, I'll check my local Asian supermarket this weekend, but in the interim I have sent this website off to auntie and see if this is what she wants.

Many thanks for your help

Was sent on Friday the 17th, I believe. You should get it any day now. If
not, please tell me.

I just sent you an e-mail, Peter, but in case you see this first for some
reason, I got them! Three discs - thanks so much. My classmates and I are
all very excited to have a listen. It will definitely be a change from the
preschool songs my one classmates has been singing to us week in and week
out!

I appreciate your kindness very much!

Judy
