Unfortunately this was not a great success. First, it was the village
MstD, not the Clos. The wine was in a mislabeled 3 bottle wooden case, otherwise I think I would have dispatched it some time ago. (The mislabeling was probably my fault, it wasn't the original storage. Must have happened nearly 20 years ago, though.) The level was good but the cork was pretty fishy: shrunken almost. The wine itself was, I think damaged, and as such not really worthy of a tasting note. Very light brick red. A little nose of violets and cherries, some griotte and mushroom in the mouth but altogether very short and over the hill. We drank it anyway, and it did acceptably with the pigeon (which was excellent), but I would not have served it to guests. With the first course, genuiyne americun shrimp cocktail (somehow had a hankering, go figure!) the 2005 Luneau-Papin L d'Or was excellent as always, and even stood up quite well to the heat in the cocktail sauce. -E |

I've had some very good 88s, even some village, but I'd guess 20+ years is more than the DdL MSD is really ready for. Glad the Muscadet was good! Jealous re the pigeon. |
