I lived in South Florida for many years my parents are immigrants from
Cuba and I was raised in a typical Cuban household. Rice and beans was
the typical fare at our home for dinner, I really miss eating this type
of food. Also our parties at our house were great, for those of you
not familiar with Cuban cuisine , we love these pastries made from puff
pastry dough. We make make them with all types of fillings, guayaba ,
queso, carne jamon, and in all shapes and sizes. For parties they make
these puff pastries in tiny sizes, and you buy them in plastic wrapped
trays or bandejas of 25, 50 or 100. Many times they include croquetas
de jamon and bocaditos made con jamon y queso or the pasta de bocadito.
You would order an especial or special for 25, 50 75 or 100 people
personas, and this would come with several trays or bandejas along
with a cake de meringue relleno or filled con natilla o piña. This
was Cuban catering in our house in Hialeah or just about anywhere in
Miami or south Florida for that matter. Some Cuban bakeries ( see
below La Latina Bakery Intl. www.latinabakery.com ) even would cater
food, they would make those deep aluminum trays filled with arroz
blanco, frijoles negro, or congri, lechon y yuca con mojo. One of my
favorites was arroz imperial which was yellow chicken and rice, but
made similar to a lasagna where the rice and shredded chicken are
layered with cheese, this is delicious with maduros. All this talk
about my favorite Cuban cuisine got me looking up in the internet to
find if any of the bakeries I would visit in south Florida would send
me up some food to the north. I found the website to the La Latina
Bakery Internacional, they are located in Miami near the airport and
they have a great website at www.latinabakery.com. I called up the
shop and spoke with the owner, and they sent via fedex some of those
bandejas de pasteles that I told you about. I called my Hispanic
friends over and we had a greatime eating all those pasteles ( guayaba,
queso, carne). The Latina bakery is a local store in miami, but if you
email them they can send you some Cuban
goodies to enjoy and rekindle your memories. The owner told me that
they are working on getting the website www.latinabakery.com translated
to English because right now it is only in español, what can you
expect if 95% of Miami is Hispanic. They also want to add a catering
page where you can submit and order with your credit card
electronically , I had to do everything over the phone, but it wasn't
bad. It is difficult to se how you could cater food via fedex, so I
suspect hot food won't work, but the pasteles arrived at my house in
2 days , and they were very fresh. Cakes probably don't ship very
well either, especially ones made out of merengue. Their phone is
