Default lump of metal found in Royal Oak!?

Ok, so a few days ago, we grilled steaks on the Weber kettle over a
blazing hot fire of Royal Oak hardwood charcoal. Then last night, we
grilled some brats and sausages, and when I went to fire up the grill,
I found what looks like a big lump of melted metal in with the
left-over coals from steak night. I can only describe it as looking
like a big chunk of volcanic rock, but it was definitely melted metal,
because I checked it with a magnet. This thing was bigger than my
outstretched palm, and almost as big as my outstretched hand, and felt
as heavy as you'd expect from a chunk of metal that size.

When we did the steaks, I used two chimneys full of hardwood, and I
don't recall seeing anything out of the ordinary or heavy come tumbling
out of the bag and into the chimneys, but then again I wasn't exactly
looking for a chunk of metal either.

Anyone ever have something like this happen to them, or know what this
chunk of metal might've been? Just curious.

Never anything as large as you describe, but I've found rocks and
metal similar to what you describe. I call 'em "Moon Rocks".

Maybe TNW will read this and (again) give his ideas on the origin of
these moon rocks.

Not uncommon to find "unusual" stuff in charcoal, tho' it's usually
rocks/dirt. The Naked Whiz's reviews even have a catagory for "strange
material".

While charcoal making factories are no doubt not "state of the art" when
compared to automated high-tech industries, it does seem that it would
be easy enough to sort out magnetic material, especially considering
that one is buying the stuff by the pound....

Thanks, that's a great site, tons of info there! I would safely say my
chunk of metal looked like a moon rock.

If you are sure it is a moon rock try turning it over to see if there
any holes. I heard clangers live in them. Thats showing my age.

The Clangers was a childrens program about little creatures living on
the moon not a butt.

I've been using Royal Oak or about 2 years now. During the first year,
I found very little "extras" in the charcoal. However, the last year,
I've gotten all kinds of "surprises"- kinda like Cracker Jacks when I
was a kid. Lots of rocks, a few metal objects, some I have no idea, and
most disturbing, several times I've found what appeared to be bits of
fiberglass insulation.

Nothing that big, but I have found an occasional rock or meteorite in a bag
of RO. It happens rarely.
