Haitian Mud Pies: Video
In Cite Soleil, people make and eat mud pies. It's not out of hunger,
but because 'sometimes, you just crave dirt.'

Kevin Sites narration:
In Haiti's worst slum, Cite Soleil, people actually make and eat mud
pies. Now, the dust is collected from the central region of Haiti in
an area called Hinche.

It's mixed with water. Here, Myriene Vincent and her son Onelove work,
pushing the dirt through a cheesecloth, separating it from twigs and
stones and mixing it into a batter.

Kevin Sites (off camera):
"So she's screening out the dirt and stuff, right?"

Translator (off camera):
"Sorry?"

Kevin Sites (off camera):
"She's screening out the rocks and the dirt?"

Kevin Sites narration:
Now once the batter is made, it's swirled out onto plastic mats and
dried in the sun.

People made dozens of these every day. They're normally eaten by
pregnant women and sometimes children.

Here, Mary Pierre actually collects hers, and she's going to sell them
five for a dime in the Cite Soleil market.

Now, people say it's not so much out of hunger that they eat them, but
"sometimes, you just crave dirt."

It's called geophagy, which is a subcategory of pica. Pica is a disease
categorized by eating inappropriate objects and material. Haiti isn't
the only place it is practiced - it occurs in the US among certain
ethnic groups, it occurs in Africa, it was practiced by native
Americans. It is an attempt to ingest needed minerals.

I missed the article, and it could have been pejorative, however
geophagy, the eating of dirt, is both common and widespread even if it
does surprise mainstream white Americans.

Been almost 50 years since I spent 2 weeks living in a whore house on the
outskirts of Port au Prince. The food was good, too, IIRC.

Well, if you don't wanna go to the appropriate groups, we'll stay

As for the intelligence gap, geneticists and psychologists disagree as
to whether the etiology is genetic vs. environmental. I'll let them
argue this issue.

As a mere layperson, I believe it's environmental, specifically, a
rotten attitude. And of course this attitude is not improved by
leftists who insist on keeping them dependent and on the victim
plantation.

I crush mine in a mortar. The resulting texture is much superior
to anything crushed in a blender, or in a newsgroup. The problem is that
I can only get fresh pandering girly-men in the spring. The rest of
the year I have to make do with frozen, and they're mushy once defrosted.

If you're having problems with bitterness try salting them heavily,
letting them drain in a colander for at least an hour, then rinsing well. Or
you could simply be overcooking them. Girly-men are delicate and sensitive
after all. Remove them from heat the minute they turn pink and curl up.
