I'm sure you'll hear this from a lot of people in this group: do atkins. If you stick to it and do it right you'll still be able to eat a reasonable amount of Q while losing weight. -- Reg email: RegForte (at) (that free MS email service) (dot) com |

I know more than one person that became diabetic while on it. From what I understand it can wreak havoc on some people. Remember, a diet is forever. There are many that allow you to eat meat, just not as much, or as often. You need to find one you can live with the easiest, because it is hard to stay on one you hate. |

My doctor recommends cutting carbs and eating more veggies and lean meats. Sort of like Atkins Lite. Of course your doctor should be able to give you a good recommendation as he knows you better than I do. Ed http://pages.cthome.net/edhome |

Sure, kill the sugar. But if you also start (assuming you're not) exercising regularly, you'll need that protein. I don't think anyone is going to gain weight eating meat, but sugar is going to nail you to the floor. (Don't forget pop/soda...tons of sugar there.) I started weighlifting a few years ago, and it does amazing things to your body after a few months. -John O |

You don't have to give up anything. But you do have to eat less of it, and
exercise more. Regards Louis Cohen Living la vida loca at N37° 43' 7.9" W122° 8' 42.8" "Eddie" > wrote in message ... > I went for a routine check-up with my doctor on Friday last. In all seriousness, start jogging.
Take it very slow and get up to running 1 hour a day, six days a week. After 1 year, I dropped to a healthy BMI, and actually eat more crappy food than I did when I was 'fat'. If you are not an expert on nutrition do not post information that has a fallacious nutritional basis. If you do the above you are definitely inviting ridicule and your posting claiming that a control of carbohydrates can cause diabetes is almost criminally absurd. And your referenced website is obviously a personal-injury lower driven spiderweb. Now back to your RIDICULOUS claim: again, please explain how restricting sugars and other carbohydrates can cause diabetes. Use your own words if you cannot find adequate websites to quote. pavane |

I am by no means an expert on nutrition because I have never >been >overweight. But if you really want insight, try this link. >http://www.atkinsdietalert.org/ Diabetes is not only a result of being obese, or even overweight. Heredity plays a large part. My wife's family (including herself) has a very high incidence of diabetes, as does mine. On her side, her mother, herself, and one of two brothers are diabetic, and only her brother could be considered fat, but not obese. In my faminy, both my parents, myself, and two sisters are/were diabetic; the only one of my immediate family who isn't is my brother, and he's borderline. The site referrenced warns often of high protein diets, but they are talking about a diet that's *very* high in protein, not one in which the protein only makes up a larger percentage of the diet than a 'normal' diet. For example: "Over time, individuals who consume very large amounts of protein..." In this, they are very right; diets very high in protein can cause problems. However, a diet like Atkins (or the South Beach Diet, which specifically addressed the problem with different types of fat), despite *some* increased problems from the higher percentage of protein that makes up the diet, has an overall benefit by reducing the problems that obesity brings on. Which, I note, they don't address at all. I am happy to discover that this site doesn't seem to be promoting their own product, a refreshing discovery. I've been onthe South Beach Diet for a few months, and have lost over 30 pounds. I have a good doctor (and a good HMO), and I have access to several specialists, including an endocrinologist. I do monthly blood/urine tests, specifically because of the danger of *any* unbalanced diet (which the Atkins type certainly is). Those who want/need to lose a substantial amount of weight should definitely not do this alone; they need the help of professionals, and I don't mean Ted at the gym! Access to medical pros who actually have some idea of nutrition is essential, which, unfortunately, many don't have, either becauise they can't, or won't. As for the Atkins diet causing diabetes, the site you referred to doesn't say that. Instead, it says that a high-protein diet can complicate diabetes. "While high-protein diets may carry potential health risks for anyone if maintained for more than a few weeks, they are especially risky for people with recurrent kidney stones, kidney disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, colon cancer, or heart disease." What they fail to mention is the much more serious problems the failure to lose weight *will* cause. While that site does give some good info, they don't seem to offer much as an alternative except to say, "eat more veggies." While not a bad idea, they also point out that the more extreme a diet is, the less likely the person is to stay on it, which means the extra weight stays, with dangers that far outweigh the problems of an Atkins-type diet. In my own case (which I'm not attempting to present as typical), my protein intake from meat is about 5-6 ounces a day, which does not qualify as 'high protein'. I have a lot of pulled pork lettuce wraps (which I've written about here before), with a lot of veggies. I'm seldom hungry. I've cut my insulin dose in half, which is a definite sign of good things going on. My blood tests are showing continuing improvement in bodily functions. The Atkins-type diet certainly can work to reduce weight and the serious problems that that extra weight produces. If it's abused, it can (like any abuse problem) cause problems. Will the Atkins diet cause diabetes? I haven't seen any evidence of it. Not even on the site you showed us. Those who use such a diet are doing so because they are overweight, a condition that itself can cause diabetes. -- Bill Replace "g" with "a" Experience is what you get when you expected something else. |

First thing I would do is buy a small notebook and take note of EVERYTHING I
ate every day for two weeks. Note if and how your weight changes. You may find that the act of recording the things you eat causes you to modify what you eat, either what it is or how much of it. (The much maligned Hawthorn Effect. Or someone's observation, "Observing something changes it.") Second thing I would do is take this list to my doctor and see where she would suggest changes. You may find that you are eating too much ice cream, bread or butter. Working with the doctor or a recommended nutritionist, see if you can devise a few simple modifications of your existing eating habits that will make you lose a little each week or month and that you can live with for a long time. Third thing I would do is start walking a bit more each day. If you can get up to two miles a day within a few weeks and keep it up, you will be all the better for it. This isn't a big deal and doesn't involve going on Weight Washers or Atkins or any other diet. This type program stands a pretty good chance of success, because it's built around what you already do and a few simple changes in your lifestyle. I'm just a lurker here...had to chuckle at your post...not the diet part but
giving up your favorite stuff. I lost a hundred pounds a few years back.(Was diagnosed with diabetes) I tried the Adkins Diet...but didn't stay on it because after awhile all that protein becomes boring. So I went back to eating the stuff I like in moderation...well maybe less. At holiday meals I would put a tablespoon of everything I liked on my plate....that way I got to eat everything I liked...and didn't end up craving for it. If we went out to dinner I would order a fillet cut it in half...cut my potato in half...and eat my salad. I also walked allot. I now have severe arthritis in my knees so haven't been able to walk for any length of time for a year...So have gained some of my weight back. We have had a pool put in our back yard and I have begun exercising again. So much for my story ![]() we must cut calories...and exercise. Also don't try to loose more then one or two pounds a week...you will find it stays off longer. Try to cut your calories by 250 to 500 calories a day. You'll find you won't have to do without that much if you do that. Weight Watchers does the point thingy and I could never understand it ![]() meat you like so well...but just cut back on the amount you usually eat. It also helps to make an appointment with a Dietician....they can explain allot to you about diet. Jacquie By the way I enjoy reading about barbequing....I'm hoping next year to buy a smoker...I love those smoked turkey legs ![]() |

You should run at a pace that you feel is laughably slow and you could run at that speed all day. I laugh at newbies who hit the track and sprint/walk. They end up injuired and swear off running. The natural instinct is to race every workout - don't do it. You should feel comfortably strong when you finish, not dying. Start slow, wear the proper sneakers... Above all, remember your cardiovascular system and muscles improve much faster than your ligaments. Run slower and shorter than you know you are capable of and slowly increase your distance. I run at a given pace/distance for at least 4 weeks before I increase either. In the beginning, I ran about 12 miles a week. After about 4 months, I would run 6 miles in an hour and do about 24 miles per week. After 7 months, I ran my first marathon. After a year, I ran 40 miles a week and can easily run 8 miles in 60 minutes. Over the last year, I have dropped my BMI 5 points and lowered my blood pressure from prehypertensive to normal. Also, I eat like a pig - I have to eat a lot to support my activity level and not waste away to nothing. To make this BBQ*related, running for fitness is like BBQing: patience is the key. |

It worked for me. I lost 30 pounds in 13 weeks, and I've kept it off for over a year. Others in the program I know were able to lose a lot more than that. They have local places all over the country. Find a place near you and go there for the free orientation. http://www.hmrprogram.com/ Also, Take your current weight, multiply by 12. That's how many calories you have to eat to maintain your current weight. East less than that, and you will lose weight. . If you exercise as well (and you should) you can subtract those calories from your caloric intake (food) and lose even more. 1 pound is 3500 calories, so if you lower your caloric intake by 1000 per day, you can lose a pound in about 3 days. Eat more fruits and veggies, drink 64 oz (or more)of water a day, make frequent trips to the bathroom, and eat some low calorie meals. Every once in a while you can have the BBQ, but not everyday. I was 5"8 and about 205 lbs. Now I'm holding steady at 175 with a Body Mass Index of about 20. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do! -- David K. |
