I received a Oster bread machine for a Christmas present. Why, oh why,
do the bread machine receipes seem to require so much yeast. When previously making about a 1 pound loaf, I used about 1 tsp of fast rising yeast (Fleishmans's). The recipes in the oster book ask for 5 teaspoons. Can anyone provide some insight? |

That's far too much yeast for almost any bread making application. All
of that is kind of a moot point, however, because you can buy yeast for $3/lb at Costco and use as much as you want. Keep the remaining frozen, and it lasts forever. No I can't. But I can tell you that our B&D 2-pounder uses 1 1/4 tsp yeast per loaf (350ml water, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp margarine, 2 tbsp dried milk, 4 cups flour and 1 1/4 tsp yeast, in that order.) Are you're sure its 5tsp and not 5 ml (which = 1 tsp)? /s |

The 5 tsp sounds like too much - guaranteed to make the loaf fall on you from rising too fast. |

That seems like alot. I use 2 tsp in the 2 lb loaf that my Hitachi turns out. I am wondering if perhaps your Oster uses a shorter cycle time and thus the extra yeast? My Hitachi has a short cycle (about an hour and 50 minutes compared to the normal four hours and 10 minutes) that when using you use extra yeast. Just a guess. Good luck with the machine and it it has a timer put in the wet ingrediants, than layer the dry ingrediants with the yeast on the very top and set it so that it gets done just as you get up in the morning. Nothing like waking up to the smell of fresh baked bread!! Bill |
