I had to do a doubletake Fos. Sure enough, I'm looking at AFB not ABF.
The links pulled up the pic's. I guess Airnews isn't as strict about rules
as they imply. They won't carry ABF 'cause they can't find a charter
for it, but they let binaries slip through into their text groups. Go
figure.

Wow, never saw that glass before. Back when it was still brewed by
Hurlimann in Switzerland, I picked up a couple of small "steins" (about
4 oz.) from Samichlaus which said "Das starkste Bier der Welt" on the
reverse. Came from the importer but, since they don't bring in the new
version, the stein's gone. Still have some nice glasses, tho',
including a nice snifter for the soon-to-be-resurrected Thomas Hardy.

BUT, I like to give my Sami some time to age, so while I've had a bottle
or two of the Austrian stuff, most of my Sami is from my cellar where I
have about 5 cases of various years throughout the late 80's and early 90's.

Oh...I'm sorry Brian. Did you BBQ guys not wanna see pictures of the beers I
drink everyday here on afb? silly me. I don't know what could have prompted
me to believe that guys like you might be interested in my binary posts here
on this text newsgroup. I guess you are the only guy to complain because
most of these guys just figgered I must have made a mistake andposted to the
wrong group. Not you, though, Bri! Nope, not you. You're way to smart for
ol' Fos. Thought for sure I could just start slippin these little beer pics
in here and there and none would be the wiser, but I guess I gotta get up a
lot earlier in the morning to run one by the ol' Default User. Sheesh!
Please don't report my abuse to the netcops, ok, Bri? I really don't think I
could live with the humiliation.

Now you wouldn't be using my untimely binary posting to a text group as an
opportunity to introduce your personal brand of spam to the group, would ya?
'Cause if ya are then go to hell, but if you're not and you're just a
friendly type fell who wanted to share some really cool beer info with a
fellow hophead.....Thank you my friend for the very cool link.

It's a little known fact that Hobbitts's' are distantly related to Trollsssz
and Ogres.

It's all in the breeding dontcha know. It had to happen sooner or later.

Not to worry 'Hobbit'. We're still here and we're not going
away. You might have noticed that most of the responses
to your mis-post including mine were far more tongue in
cheek then critical. I feel wounded because you got at
least as much response as my bank statement did. Of
course we know that we'll never, ever make a mistake

I think your friend in Nigeria is getting desparate. He's even
e-mailed me several times. I told him that BOB was willing
to help out, but nothing ever came of it. I never got my

What a minute- one lousy link to a commercial site and I'm "spamming"?
I was just pointing out the website of Samichlaus' former importer, who
used to sell a different glass than the one you showed. I'd forgotten
to put the link in the post, thus the reply to my own post. I didn't
realize such an innocent, on topic reply would get such a reaction (esp.
considering the reaction you knew YOU'D get for posting OT and binaries).

I suppose that's why I've NEVER seen a link to the websites of Kamado,
Smokey Mt., Klose., et. al., or for charcoal or for any other bbq gizmo
on this group.

But, yeah, you caught me. I'm the owner of the great beer importer
who carries one of the best known Belgian beers and some fine UK imports
but I'm just dying to make another $1 profit total selling a couple of
glasses to the light lager drinkers on afb...

<snicker> The lld on afb. I like that.

Thanks again for the link. Pretty cool.
So you buy your Sami by the case? A very interesting idea but I couldn't
possibly keep it around long enough to make it worth the trouble. Although
it does take me quite awhile to drink one. Liquid refreshment on a hot day
it ain't.

Well, it helps to have a cellar of 20-30 cases of various "age-able"
beers, of course. About 4 cases of Samichlaus, 2 of Fuller's Vintage, 4
of various years of Thomas Hardy, some Alaskan Smoked Porter, Le Coq
Russian Imperial Stout, Courage Russian Imperial Stout ('92), various
Belgians, various cases of Bigfoot, Celebration, Brooklyn Monster, Old
Horizontal & other US impies and barleywines, etc. Even a bottle of
Ballantine Burton Ale, brewed in the 40's bottled in the 60's that I'll
probably share with a co-worker when they close my plant later this
month. He's also my "beer partner"- we often split cases of the
expensive stuff (and then the guy who liked it best tries to buy the
rest off of the other guy).

I don't want to beat a several-day-old horse here, but I'll have to
disagree with you. Binary attachments are more than an annoyance in
newsgroups, they can actually lead to some news services dropping said
groups.

As such, I'll continue to politely ask that people refrain from doing
so.

Aren't you doing the same thing? Why is it ok for you to object to what
I do, but not for me?

Besides, you are missing the point. Posting binaries can cause the
newsgroup to be dropped by servers. That's not fair to people who use
those servers to access the group. Of course, the occasional binary
won't cause that, but if people start to post binaries regularly, that
could happen. One way things tend to grow is when they see others do
things and no one objects.

As you point out, this is an unmoderated group. So what? Does that mean
we allow any behavior without raising objections? Groups where that is
the norm soon spiral into uselessness.

When I see behavior that I don't like, and that I feel is a violation of
netiquette, I will object. You can call it netcopping or moderation if
you like, but I don't care.

All of what you say is true. It has also been explained many times to
the people who read this group, including frohe. Many people have
found it to be a rational, compelling explanation of why binaries are
unwelcome in non-binary groups. A few others choose to ignore or
downplay the importance of long-standing traditions of online
behavior, apparently believing that asking politely for people to
adher to these traditions amounts to "netcopping" or an attempt to
moderate.

That's dumb, of course, and it has also been pointed out to frohe.

Hey, the guy made a mistake and posted to the wrong ng. He came back and
apologized. It's over.Or maybe it's not over 'til Kevin says it's over.

I didn't say anything about or to the guy who posted the binary. I was
responding to frohe's comments (see above), and to the reasonable,
logical follow-up the comments received.

Try to keep up.

Let me just say this....I posted a pic to this group by accident, as you
know. I posted late at night and came home from work the next day with the
intention of posting an apology firt thing. When I found your reply...a very
polite reply I might add....it somehow just rubbed me the wrong way and I
got all smart ass on ya. I am sorry . I just figgered anyone here who knew
me would know that I posted a binary to the text group by mistake and would
not feel the need to remind me to not do so in the future. I counted you
among those who I thought knew me that well. Looking back, however, I
realize I have not been a contributor to this group as regularly as I used
to be and maybe...just maybe...you aren't all that familiar with me after
all.

I swear man....I didn't mean to **** anybody off...forgive me man...please
forgive me...I don't believe I can live with the shame.:>)

Who said I'm objectin to anythang? You wanna try and control this group, go
ahead. Won't work tho, which is what I already said.

No, I understand full well. And my point remains - if ya gotta crappy
server that drops groups, get one that won't.

Uhm, this is UseNet. Fair? lol Take off the rose-colored glasses.

I called it like it is. Do I care if ya care? No.

Sure, I understand completely. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the
discussion moved on past your particular minor faux pas into the realm
of netcopping, pros and cons.

It's one of those things where I recognize your name and that you post
with some frequency. However, I try to be as even-handed as possible.
Messages like the one I posted are not just for you but for others who
may see the image and think that is the common practice here. That way
they know that it is not.

At no time have I been angry or upset with you.

Actually, it's been my experience that it does work. Otherwise, I'd be
pretty foolish to do it. I've been a participant in a number of groups
and I know that peer pressure on elements of netiquette does tend to
work on most reasonable people. Unreasonable people are going to be
unreasonable, because that's what they do. Those you killfile and move
on past.

> I called it like it is. Do I care if ya care? No.

Fair enough. I've stated before that this is one newsgroup where I want
to have as calm an experience as possible. I have other groups for
contentious debate. As such, I'll post polite requests when I see the
need. I will understand that you think it is pointless and not bother
trying to convince you otherwise.
