Default Got me a Smokey Joe ;-)

Hi All,

I know it's not a big deal but I'm really excited about my new Weber
Smokey Joe. I have a cheapo gas grill that was given to me but I haven't
used it much. I decided I wanted a charcoal grill and I figured I would
start small and work my way up. I'll probably get a stand up Weber
kettle grill after I get the hang of this one and then maybe a cheap
bullet smoker. Although after lurking here and digging around the net
I've decided I need one of those big smoker/grill side firebox jobs.
I'll wait a little while on that though. If I can do a good pork
shoulder in a cheap bullet smoker then I could probably talk the wife
into a larger do it all model. She loves BBQ so it shouldn't be too hard
of a sale. Anyway, just wanted to say hi. I'll be lurking around and
reading the FAQ some more.

Cheers

I'm not sure you (I?) could really cook barbecue on a Smokey Joe, but it is
definitely a fine (small) grill. You can cook some great food on it.

Take some pictures and post them over at alt.binaries.food

I know what you mean. I know I'm not really barbecuing just yet but I'm
headed in that direction. I figure the little joe will be handy for
starting coals and what not when I get something else. Not to mention it
would be fun to take on vacation etc. We were watching some barbecue
shows and I mentioned to the wife that we could cook that mouth watering
pulled pork with a cheapo bullet smoker. I don't think she would mind at
all if one showed up at my house sometime soon ;-) Maybe I could just
tell her a WSM costs about 30 bucks ;-O

The Smokey Joe is a fine cooker when cooking for 2 adults. I would
suggest getting the Weber Kettle immediately. They only cost about $80
and you can probably cook for 6.

For the bullet, get A WSM. Don't waste your time with the cheap ones.
They do work well, but you will be happier with a WSM. Having both the
Weber Kettle and a WSM, you won't need one of the big smoker/grill side
firebox jobs. They are also good, but I have read they can be a fuel
hog and temperature control can take some time to learn. The WSM is
available for $179 through Amazon(free shipping) so the 2 of these Weber
units would set you back $260. You will probably use them both during
the course of a summer and winter too, if you really get into it :-)

You can get more information on the WSM from
http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/index.html and they receive a little
bit for orders placed coming through their site. This will help keep
this site available for others to use, enjoy and learn from.

Happy Q'en,
BBQ

Look for one at thrift shops and garage sales. I've seen 'em at both.

Thanks. That's what I thought, too, but I wasn't sure...

You'll love the Smokey Joe. You're right, if she wants BBQ, she'll just have to
let you get the WSM (or a Kamado [smilie thingie goes here])
