Seems to be a bumper crop this year for morels, at least in my corner
of Idaho. Four of us picked 12 pounds of them Saturday; they're drying in the sun at my house right now. Local produce stands were sellling them for $25 a pound last year. This year, $10. Going to sautee some tonight to server on top of steak. -- Kevin S. I'm more than a bit envious, Kevin. The only mushrooms I ever picked (looong time ago) grew in cow patties and tasted like shit. Jack Curry |

Are there any nasty mushrooms around that you have to careful off - around
here, if you eat the wrong one you need a liver transplant the next day - no exaggeration. As delicious as collected mushrooms are, I'll get mine at the Berkeley Bowl. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Louis Cohen Living la vida loca at N37° 43' 7.9" W122° 8' 42.8" "Kevin S. It is extremely rare when fresh morels are available and they cost 6 pounds sterling for a 50 grams dried pack. Graeme (green with envy) |

We pick only morels, which are quite distinctive and--to my knowledge--don't have any poisonous lookalikes. There is a similar-looking 'shroom called a false morel, but I believe it is edible. If someone can't tell >the difference, then they need to pray to Darwin. I agree on the appearance-- though if your only association with Morels was a picture you saw in a book a few years ago, I can see how someone might think of morels, especially the last link. [and if their eating mushrooms on those criteria, all the Darwin references apply] It must be the name 'False Morel' that makes lots of folks go ahead and eat them every year. And sometimes they get away with it for years before it bites them back. Jim |
