Seems to be a bumper crop this year for morels, at least in my corner
of Idaho. Four of us picked 12 pounds of them Saturday; they're drying
in the sun at my house right now.

Local produce stands were sellling them for $25 a pound last year.
This year, $10.

Going to sautee some tonight to server on top of steak.

I'm more than a bit envious, Kevin. The only mushrooms I ever picked
(looong time ago) grew in cow patties and tasted like shit.

here is a great morel recipe
Buzz

if you find some nice big morels - rinse them out & pat dry

take your walleye filets, squeeze a lil' fresh lemon juice over them &
season with salt & pepper

put the walleye in a buttered pan, and bake in a 375* oven (or smoker) for
just about 10 minutes...until the fish just turns white & begins to flake

remove from oven and let cool - then flake/break into pieces small enough to
fit in the hole of the morel

once flaked, I like to add a lil' fresh thyme to the fish before stuffing it
in the morels

use a spoon, and fill the morels with the flaked chunks of fish

secure the walleye-stuffed morels with bamboo skewers...alternating with
some pieces of rolled up pepperoni

cook over coals (not too hot) until they are warmed through -
brushing/basting with melted lemon butter

I use 2 bamboo skewers - assuming the "B" is a stuffed morel, it looks
something like this: ==B=B=B=B=B==

Are there any nasty mushrooms around that you have to careful off - around
here, if you eat the wrong one you need a liver transplant the next day - no
exaggeration. As delicious as collected mushrooms are, I'll get mine at the
Berkeley Bowl.

I don't think taste was a priority with those shrooms now was it Jack?

We're getting $19.89 for them here in the Northeast...shipped in from the
Northwest......Chanterelles seem to be having a good spring also.

Kevin,

If there is one thing I spend too much money on its mushrooms. $25 a pound
is a really good price compared to what I (very occasionally) pay in the UK.
It is extremely rare when fresh morels are available and they cost 6 pounds
sterling for a 50 grams dried pack.

Yes, but weren't the pretty colors and tracers worth getting past the
taste?

I'm sure there are plenty. We pick only morels, which are quite
distinctive and--to my knowledge--don't have any poisonous lookalikes.
There is a similar-looking 'shroom called a false morel, but I believe
it is edible. We call the false morels "brains" because that's what
they look like.

They should be plentifull and inexpensive [comparatively speaking] in
The West, after all the recent Alberta and BC forest fires.

Just so you never try it-- The False Morel is one of those that might
give you a 'pass' for years, then one day decide to kill you.

I agree on the appearance-- though if your only association with
Morels was a picture you saw in a book a few years ago, I can see how
someone might think of morels, especially the last link. [and if
their eating mushrooms on those criteria, all the Darwin references
apply]

It must be the name 'False Morel' that makes lots of folks go ahead
and eat them every year. And sometimes they get away with it for
years before it bites them back.
