Default BBQ in Hawaii

Leaving tomorrow for Maui, the Big Island then Honolulu. I can't believe I
waited till the last minute to ask, but
any suggestions for good Q on the Islands? I know they do the Luai thing
there, but any special places folks know of?

I'm interested in the responses other post as I make it to the islands
once a year and would like to hit a few new food sites time permitting.
Here's what little info I have WRT BBQ in the 50th state.

I generally spend most of my time in Hawai'i on the Big Island in and
around Kailua-Kona so can't help you much with your other stops--
especially Maui. Then again, my second home in Kona is the Kona
Brewpub which is a pizza & sandwich kinda place. Even though they have
a decent pork sandwich, I seek out the Thai place down the street
because I can get some delicious (and blazingly hot) dishes there that
I haven't quite found at home.

IME, most of the BBQ you find in the islands is in the form of Kalua
Pua'a (aka Kalua Pork or sometimes Imu Pork); which is one of the items
served at a luau. It's pork roasted (traditionally) in an imu (earth steam
oven). It's closest to pulled pork but without the wood smoke flavor and
spices you'd expect from mainland BBQ.

Many restaurants I've been to have either an appetizer or a sandwich of
kalua pork. Some is likely prepared in a kitchen oven rather than an
imu, but it's still quite tasty.

Sauces tend to be on the sweet side without much smoke flavor.

Not much info on locations but hopefully it helps.

Don't know about the other islands, but here's an old newspaper article
about a rib taste-off:

http://starbulletin.com/1999/01/27/features/story1.html

Deb's Southern Comforts is still operating in Kailua. You can find her
website at

http://www.debsribs.com

There's also Molly's Smokehouse in Wahiawa. Her website is

http://www.mollyssmokehouse.com

Those are the only two real smokehouses I know of, as I didn't get
interested in real barbecue until I came here. There isn't much demand
for "real" barbecue outside of the neighborhoods surrounding the
military bases.

I do recommend you try Big City Diner. I think they have three
locations now but we enjoyed going to the original in Kaimuki.

Um, Kili? You may want to consider how the kids these days are using
that phrase.

And, no, I don't mean "E-mail me."

I can't believe you expect Q in Hawaii. Why don't you eat what they do
best? Even if you find Q it's not likely to be what you expected.

I'll bet the seafood is to die for!

These days you almost have to assume that that was the correct usage and
meaning.

Kili's not a kid, nor was she talking to one.

I remember how strange it was to get rice with eggs on a breakfast plate.

Lived just outside of Waikiki in 85.

Stick to good local food. Fish that are fresh, and drinks that are
expensive

Yes! I'll repeat it here, 'cause it fits so well in this thread:

Yup, that's it. I went with a group of people to Santa Fe New Mexico one
time and one of the guys in the group only wanted to eat at McDonalds
because "he knew what he'd be eating." Sad, really sad. He didn't get his
way of course.

LOL, even here at home, that's exactly the reason that I avoid MacDonalds.

I hope you got to eat at least once in the 'Santa Fe Station' Kathy.
Probably
about the pricyest (sp) place in Santa Fe, but the Margaritas are killer and
the
food is superb. About four years running, I rode down there with a group of
motorcycle friends on each successive Memorial Day Weekend from Boulder,
Co.That was in the early '80's.

I don't remember eating at a place named that. I think we ate at budget
priced local restuarants. I don't remember the name of the one Mexican
place we ate at but it was really good. We were just there for a weekend
that time. But you never know when the hubby and I will get the urge and
take off for somewhere. Santa Fe is only about an 8 hour drive from here.

Santa Fe Station was in fact the original Santa Fe railroad station. The
tracks are long gone and the building remodeled into a restaurant. There's
so much good food to be had in Santa Fe, that poor quality just can't
survive. In fact, I don't remember seeing any of the fast food chains
although
I'm sure they must be there. There's some places right on or very near the
town square that are quite good as well. They used to have an art festival
in
the square every Memorial Day. But on our last trip around 1990 it wasn't
there.

I remember lotsa Tejas burger joints doing the old green chili
cheeseburger thing. I think various Sonics still do. Tres yummy!
Hell, K, lighting a McMuffn on fire would be an improvement!
