Pick up the latest Philadelphia Magazine. There's a decent write-up on local BBQ places, some in and around Philly, some in NJ. -- John |

A few years ago there was a NY Times article about BBQ in the NYC metro area and they picked a take-out place in Newark as one of the best. There was a place in downtown Somerville for awhile, as well as one around Keansburg (which I remember most for having cotton plants in barrel planters outside on the sidewalk). There's currently a bar in Cream Ridge (near 195-Great Adventure) that has BBQ and they seem to be adding a new smoker. They also have 30+ beers on tap, but, unfortunately, the place doesn't seem to get much business- the beers are often stale from being tapped too long and they are often "out" of a lot of menu items (no pulled pork the last time I went). If any of these sound interesting, I can do some research and pull up some names... Of course there are a lot of places that CLAIM to sell barbecue- the most annoying is a small chain called "Big Ed's Barbecue"- never saw a wiff of smoke at any of 'em and they didn't even sell baked beans OR cole slaw as side dishes, IIRC. |

Also, note that this page for the NJ BBQ contest lists a lot of teams from NJ and PA, some of which sound as if they're from established businesses. Unfortunately, the winners from 2003 and 2001 don't seem to note the town/state... http://www.njbbq.com/winners_2002.htm |
