FBA (Florida BBQ Assoc.) requires a 4 hour seminar that includes judging several turn in boxes in 2 or more categories. Several FBA contests including this weekend's Funcook have a judge's seminar on the Friday afternoon prior to the contest. That makes you a trained judge. Once you have judged your first FBA contest you are then a certified judge. You must judge at least once per year in order to maintain your certification. MIM (Memphis in May) training is a full day with a written test at the beginning and the end (same test) and actual on-site and blind judging. You then have to judge 2 MIM contests to be certified. KCBS has a certified judge's school that is usually held on the Thursday or Friday before a KCBS event. I don't know what their rules are but you can visit the FBA website http://www.flbbq.org and click on the links page for access to the KCBS website. Ricky |
