Default What program do you keep you recipes on?

After I noticed I've lost all mt recipes, again, largerly my fault cause I
dont have a central place to store them. I'm ready to invest in a compter
program, if there isnt a free one that will store my recipes.

I keep mine on paper. I've never had to reformat a book.

I have a few files in Word. I also use Access to sort and find them. You
just make a table and "paste" the section or page of the file into the table
and when you click on the cell, it opens Word, opens the file, shows that
page.

The Access table has headings for Name, Category, Main Ingredient,
Source,and finally the recipe.

I keep things backed up every couple of months to a CD.

I use a spreadsheet, easy to search and most computers come
with one free. If you are real bored, make a column next to
the amounts to create 1/2, 2x, 3x batches of things like
sauce, rub, etc. The first column in the following example is
just a multiple of the partial batch value (0.5) and the
normal batch quantity.

Example
================================================== ======
Barbecue Peach Salsa
p226 of Paul Kirk's Championship BBQ Sauces
partial full
0.5 batch
1.75 3.5 cups yield
1 2 cups diced peaches
..5 1 cups diced roma tomatoes
..125 .25 cups sugar
..125 .25 cups clover honey
..125 .25 cups white vinegar
..5 1 Tbsp minced jalapeno
1 2 tsp chili powder
1 2 cloves garlic, pressed
..5 1 tsp salt
..25 .5 tsp white pepper

combine all ingredients and let flavors mingle for several
hours in the fridge, or eat right away.
================================================== ============

I print these out and keep them in a folder handy in the
kitchen. As I make alterations, notes and spill stuff on the
printout, I update the spreadsheet and print out a fresh copy.
This keeps my cookbooks clean and I don't have to try and hold
open a page while stirring hot bubbling bbq sauce. Also handy
to give out to friends who want a copy of the recipe. As
someone else stated, backup your files to prevent data loss.

If you really have to have a program, go for Master Cook. It ain't all that
expensive and it's the best. I have a couple of others including "On The
Menu". The latter is way too cumbersome. I seldom use a program any-
more. I cut and paste recipies into a directory named (are you ready for
this) recipies.

I keep a lot of them on paper, but I've nearly filled a second 3 ring
binder, and it's a pain to keep them in order. Also maintaing an
index is a PITA. An idea is to upload them to "Recipe Source"
(recipesource.com) and let them worry about it. Their search
engine is pretty good.

Master Cook. No longer supported by anybody, but easy to find and
retrieve your favorites. Easy to customize, and add categories and
personal cookbooks. Can import recipes from any text based document
as well. I'm going on 8 years with it and does the job for me.

You can import recipes from HTML web pages too. Actually if you can copy
and paste you can import recipes from any web source.

I store my recipes on a zip disk. I also have them all printed out on
4x6 recipe cards. When someone wants one of my recipes, I just print
it from my zip disk or email it to them. I only have to type the
recipe once. After that it's copy, paste, print, attach whatever and
someone has a copy.

Amen to that. I use a Maxtor external hard drive connected via USB 2.0.
Copy functions are quick and painless. Plus, it's easy to take it with me.
