Default City Boy needs help

IMMM BAAAACK.

Some of you may remember my questions about smokers and electric grills.

well I cant get the smoker yet but I will.

its a last minute thing but I want to make a party for the
people I work with about 20 people. ( grill /bbq )
I am a total newbie and have never cooked on coals
only gas grills ( Webber genesis ) I only have a motorcycle now
and live in Manhattan, NY so I don't know where I can get gas.
every once and a while I still like reading this group and figure.
if I am going to learn it might as well be on something that can
grill a nice steak as well as BBQ. I am going with charcoal.
I am willing to spend about $250 on the BBQ and would like
all the little gizmo's that can help a total newbie like myself.

I have the rotisserie for the Webber and would love a way to rig it
up on a charcoal grill. if possible .

what grill do you think I should buy.
and what suggestions might you have for preparing for the party.
I am a newbie but I am also a good host. I want them to walk away
happy. well I am going to go read the FAQ and see what kind of coal bbq's
are out there.

in short something that can grill a nice steak and also let me learn the art
of BBQ.
Thank You.
Tom

Get a Weber Smokey Mountain, it's in your price range with some change left over
for meat. Then check Google and Google Groups and read as much as you can.

Also, check the BBQ FAQ

Then ask specific questions...you'll do fine.

Thank you Bob I will do that.
I kind of like the Webber 1 touch gold. looks like a great grill
with plenty of room for porter house streaks.
I must admit and show my total newbieness with coal grills.
I wanted one with a thermometer . I understand about indirect cooking
and all that. I used the genesis for years and loved it. it is still in my
back yard
and probably needs to be rebuilt. living in Manhattan NY I have no idea
where to get
gas so that is why I am going with coal. I also kind of like the idea about
cooking with coal.
it is a little late in the season ( just a little ) - well anyway I have
a ton of work I have to do.
thank you for the help.

THe first thing that I did to my WSM after assembling it was to put two
thermometers in it. One at the level of both cooking racks and put
handles on the middle section. Weber sells a screw on type of
thermometer now. All that it requires is drilling a 3/8" hole and then
mounting the thermometers. Piece of cake and now I know the temperature
at both rack levels. Why Weber just doesn't put these on for a couple of
bucks is beyond me.
