I don't know what planet you're from tutall, but 30 miles to me is 60
miles round trip. That's four gallons of fuel in my little Ford Ranger
which translates to $10.40 where I live. I can't see adding that to the
price of my BBQ fuel.

Planet practical:
I usually get 3-4 40lb bags at a time so to make it worthwhile.

46.4 miles one way from Lazzari's to my house. That's 92.8 miles. I
get about 25 mpg on my Forester. That's 3.75 gal. @ $3.05 (Costco) a
gallon = $11.45.
The same mesquite in 40lb bags in two stores near me (Central and
Smart and Final) are about $14.00. At Lazzari's it would cost me
$25.00 (fuel cost added). Now, my time is worth about $50/hr. It
would take me about two hours roundtrip. That's another $100.00.
So it looks like my Lazzari mesquite would cost me $125 for one bag.
As for the lump I was referred to at Wally World, I forgot to ask what
kind it was. Is it mesquite?
I've used mesquite only once in a NBBD I owned before I got the K. The
butt I smoked came out great, not pulled, but very good. I've heard
mesquite is not good to smoke with. For grilling, yes!
Eddie
Also, yes I'm a professional driver. I avoid driving when I'm not
working. (never ask a bus driver to go for a drive, it's like asking
a mail carrier to go for a walk)

But you can buy two bags and get it down to about $65 each.

More to the point Eddie is to remember the place is there when you are
in the neighborhood. And Lazzaris carries hardwood lump too, so you
don't have to get the crappy Texas weed stuff. They also make a
hardwood based briquet you can't find elsewhere.
You come by on a week day, let me know, I work nearby and we could
meet up. If near lunchtime, my treat at the 6 mile road house.

Hey, thanks for the invite amigo, but maybe you're new to afb and
don't know that I can't eat. By mouth. I'm on a feeding tube and
will be for the rest of my life. Had throat cancer operation in 2007
and as a result unable to eat by mouth.

I very rarely travel up the peninsula as the closer it is to SF the
less I want to go. :-)

I do remember going to Belmont about 20 years ago when I had a 64
Studebaker. There was a place there that sold Studebaker parts.

I occasionally see Lazzaris merchandise in local stores. They tend to
be pricey. For example, mesquite charcoal. To me mesquite is
mesquite and I know it only comes from Mexico. Sure, Lazzaris does
take out the small slivers and larger chunks and the packaging is on
the fancy side, but for half price I don't mind the chunks being in
odd sizes. I have a good way to cut them to size. A hammer!

btw, the inability to eat (or drink) does not prevent me from
continuing to enjoy my favorite activity - grilling and smoking.
Although I can't enjoy my cooking results, I know how good (or bad) my
efforts are when I see the smiles and hear the smacking of lips from
the family.

I know this group mainly features ideas on smoking (true barbecuing)
but I also cook in: crock pot, pressure cooker, hot air cooking, caja
china cooking, convection oven cooking, Showtime rotisserie cooking
and lastly, grilling on my ever trusty 25 yr old Weber kettle.

.. . .

The lump I get from Wally World is Royal Oak and is made from Oak,
Hickory, Maple and other hardwoods. It actually doesn't make much
if any difference what hardwood it's made from as long as it is hardwood
and actually converted to lump charcoal in a kiln type environment. Oak
lump and mesquite lump perform exactly alike in a BBQ pit.

Not my experience, not even close.

Truth is is there's a decent amount of wood left in most lump so it's
not just carbon.
