Default New Grill grates

My EC (El Cheapo) Charmglow grill is just about shot, but I thought
I'd give it a last chance by replacing the totally failed grill grates. The
originals are porcelein coated cast iron. The porcelein blistered an
peeled over large areas allowing the CI to rust. The grates became
unuseable when bits of the grate began sticking to the food. Google
brought up "thepartsbiz.com" and I got new identicql grates delivered
for $49.20 including $9.77 shipping. The local stores didn't have
anything even close to fitting the grill. Although these grates are listed
as "Universal", they are identical to the grates I took out.(Except
these are new)

Good for you, Brick. Give the old girl one last fling :-)

I replaced the original steel grates on our Weber Silver Genesis B with a
porcelain coated cast iron grate from Home Depot. They're holding up well
after 500-600 grills. As you probably know they turn a marginal product into
a fairly decent one. There's a lot of porceleinized cast iron grates out
there these days, probably of substantially different quality.

That's an excellent question. On the one hand, I use the grill very
infrequently. I doubt I actually grilled with it more then a dozen times.
What I did use it for was to clean all my smoker and grill grates by
cranking it all the way up and leaving it for an hour or two. The grates
didn't like that much. I think it's fair to call it "Grate Abuse". The
grates on my Kitchen "Jenn Air' range have suffered a similar fate,
but I can't explain why they have blistered. The worst abuse they get
is to run with high heat under a 22 qt pressure canner for an hour or
so. but they haven't rusted and thus remain useable. The outdoor grates
began to flake off on the food. Not good.

I was responding to the group. I think your question is a good one. After
the BTU output of the burner the grate is the most important component. It's
important to have porcelein covered cast iron grates on a gas grill. You'd
like them to hold up. My Weber non porcelein grates are rusting in the
garage. Steel grates and stainless steel grates don't belong on a gas grill.

If I had a practicle bone in my body, I'd have a few hundred thou in the
bank by now. Fortunately, I don't have the hassle of worrying about what
to do with that much money.

Your practice would be fine if my cooking grates would reasonably fit
in my fire box. Alas, although they theoretically fit, in practice it isn't
reasonable to do that.

This particular grill is going to a new home before the week is out. I
donated it to an assisted living facility.
