Micanopy fire destroys couple's home, kills pets

A Micanopy couple lost their home Wednesday after it burned to the ground,
claiming the lives of their cat and dog, according to Alachua County Fire
Rescue.

James Whitten, 62, arrived at his mobile home, 18410 SW 1st St. in Micanopy,
at about 4 p.m. to find it engulfed in flames, said ACFR spokesman Mark
Hughes. ACFR crews kept the burning embers from igniting nearby woods and a
nearby shed and livestock pavilion, Hughes said.

The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation, but foul play
is not suspected.

The American Red Cross is assisting Whitten and his wife, Leslie Shannon
Whitten, in replacing food and clothing, and the couple is staying with
relatives, Hughes said.

Several other pets are unaccounted for and may be hiding in nearby woods,
Hughes said. There were no other injuries and no one was at the home at the
time of the fire.

I am truly sad for BigJim and his wife. I've personally learned quite a

The address in my post is the one that Keri provided.
Highway 441 is only _about_ 5 miles long in Micanopy and I'm betting that
the difference between 106-A and 106-C is the difference between 2 doors
(or desks) inside the bank. Micanopy isn't that big a place. In order to
avoid confusion, I'd send to the original address and if it's the wrong
one, they'll have the routine figured out to get the check moved to the
correct desk after a couple of them show up.

I've been sitting here reading all these postings about Big Jim and kept
thinking, it just can't be "the" Big Jim that just had his cooker stolen
from him! What a blow this must be! What a horrible hardship for the man
and his family!

I don't know Big Jim except through AFB but, Here's wishing you huge
inner strength Big Jim!!! Hope that some day we'll get the chance to
meet after you get everything back in order, (Which you will do!)

Ya know, even if he has insurance, there is always a thousand little
things that insurance won't cover or make right. I wish and hope that
everyone here sends just a wee bit to help Big Jim recover!

deserve it. Don't anybody bet on insurance covering enough of the loss.
By the time the insurance company excludes deductible and special
exceptions, they'll be lucky to get half the value of the loss. And of
course their mementos and pets cannot be replaced at all. My check
will go out in the mail tomorrow.

As a witness and Real Estate agent in San Diego where we suffered over 2,000
homes losses in Oct '03 fires, I can't emphasis enough how instrumental a
public adjuster could be in getting the fair shake from an insurance
company. You must a least interview a public adjuster.
