Default News on BigJim from G'ville Sun

I'm very sorry to here this about Big Jim. Shit happens and we got to get it
behind us.

I'm thinking of you Jim.

Micanopy fire destroys couple's home, kills pets

A Micanopy couple lost their home Wednesday after it burned to the ground,
claiming the lives of their cat and dog, according to Alachua County Fire
Rescue.

James Whitten, 62, arrived at his mobile home, 18410 SW 1st St. in Micanopy,
at about 4 p.m. to find it engulfed in flames, said ACFR spokesman Mark
Hughes. ACFR crews kept the burning embers from igniting nearby woods and a
nearby shed and livestock pavilion, Hughes said.

The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation, but foul play
is not suspected.

The American Red Cross is assisting Whitten and his wife, Leslie Shannon
Whitten, in replacing food and clothing, and the couple is staying with
relatives, Hughes said.

Several other pets are unaccounted for and may be hiding in nearby woods,
Hughes said. There were no other injuries and no one was at the home at the
time of the fire.

Yeah, it looks like it IS TRUE!

http://www.am850.com/news/archives/000485.asp
"January 5, 2005 05:57 PM
A house-fire this afternoon in Micanopy has left the building in ruins
and those living there homeless. Alachua County Fire-Rescue Spokesman
Mark Hughes says the homes two residents have been turned over to
American Red Cross for assistance. No injuries are reported."

I am truly sad for BigJim and his wife. I've personally learned quite a
bit from him in his replies to my posts. I'm just glad there was no
loss of human life.
I'm happy the Red Cross is helping (if they can do anything right it's
shelter, food, clothes) but, I bet Big Jim is teaching 'bout cooking!

Here's a note that Keri C. posted on Ray Basso's BBQ forum concerning
donations for Big Jim and his family:

"Just got the word - a fund for Big Jim has now been set up at Florida
Citizen's Bank 106-C East Highway 441, Micanopy Florida 32667. Just send
the check there in James Whitten's name, and it will go to the account for
him and his wife."

That should make things easier on both ends,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Big Jim.

Oh man.......

I am so sorry to hear this.

Called Dave Bugg to let him know....

If anyone gets ahold of Jim could you send me the phone for where he's
staying via email?

Sending off a check to the bank that will hopefully help out a little.

We've been on the phone with Big Jim for the past couple of days and since
there has been such an outpouring of questions as to where to go if you want
to help, an account has been set up for Big Jim and his wife.

Florida Citizen's Bank 106-C East Highway 441, Micanopy Florida 32667. Just
send
the check there in James Whitten's name, and it will go to the account for
him and his wife.

Thanks everyone.

I've never understood why all the shit happens to the people that least
deserve it. Don't anybody bet on insurance covering enough of the loss.
By the time the insurance company excludes deductible and special
exceptions, they'll be lucky to get half the value of the loss. And of
course their mementos and pets cannot be replaced at all. My check
will go out in the mail tomorrow.

bit from him in his replies to my posts. I'm just glad there was no
loss of human life.
I'm happy the Red Cross is helping (if they can do anything right it's
shelter, food, clothes) but, I bet Big Jim is teaching 'bout cooking!
