Default Spices and Herbs for Dry Rubs and Sauces

I just wanted to pass along some info that may be helpful. I'm in no
way affiliated wih the company, but I've recently discovered a company
that sells spices, herbs, etc, that puts similar items sold in grocery
stores to shame. If you're buying your supplies for rubs and sauces at
grocery stores, you might want to try this link:

http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/shophome.html

I've tried alot of their stuff, and it is awesome! They also have
pre-mixed seasoning blends for dry rubs for every application
imaginable. Their customer service has been excellent, and their
products are superior to anything I've ever used!

For dry rubs try ZACH's in Deer park, TX (near Houston) (1-281-476-0808)
(www.zachspice.com) I like their Sweet Rub.

Penzey's is well know in this group. Mentioned not so often is
Pendery's which offers much the same product line as Penzeys,
but which tends to be a little cheaper. Check out Sweet Freedom
Farm (sweetfreedomfarm.com) for pepper products, whole and
ground chili's. All three sources are not only better in quality,
but are much cheaper then the grocery stores. If you use a lot
of rub, you can't afford to not use these sources as they package
in quarter, half and full pound sizes. Be careful about ordering
full pound quantities of any spice. That's a hell of a lot of spice.
(Don't ask me how I know)

I'd keep looking around after checking at their prices....

Look in your local phone books for wholesale spices, and walk in with cash.

I just paid $4.81# for 5# sweet hungarian paprika, $3.29# for garlic and onion powder,
$1.09# for Kosher salt (flaked), and $2.89# for red pepper flakes.

We can get excellent spices from our ethnic shops here, but still go
to Penzey's for their Vanilla and spice mixtures. We order on line
and the don't **** you over too too badly on shipping.

We keep all sorts of spices in the house, but I still like some of the mixes
from Penzeys. Last week I put some Bicentennial Rub on a chicken, cooked it
on the rotisserie, and it was just fantastic.

Ever try their Galena rub, Ed? Curry in the background. Great on dead
bird.
