Default Royal Oak Lump in NH/MA?

Hi,
I've been to three coastal NH Walmarts looking
for lump and these stores had lump last year, but
all I've seen is briquets thus far. Anyone seen the
Royal Oak lump in any NH or northeastern MA store?
Thanks.

Greetings from Lee.....

I got a few bags of Royal oak at the WalMart in Newington a month ago.
I need to go get some more--now you have me worried...

Was just there last night and that's where I scored big time last
year. I saw none and didn't have the time or guts to ask anyone.
I've tryied to explain lump to Walmart employees in the past. Not
a good use of time.

Check http://doitbest.com and see if one of their stores is near you.
If so, they can order Royal Oak lump if they don't already have it.

Kyle,
Have a look here for 3 sources for "Wicked Good" lump in your area.
Great reviews in nakedwiz, b t w. Denser than RO, longer burning.

You can order lump through True Value hardware stores or from some
restaurant supply houses. Brand may differ, but the charcoal is still good.

True value in my town stocks Cowboy. I keep meaning to go ask them to stock
Royal oak or something differant.

Carl's Market, just over the border on Route 1 in Kittery, carries B & B and
Wicked Good (which is a new product for them). Have just finished my first
bag of Wicked Good and it was excellent. Maybe 1/4 pound of dust and chips
at the bottom. No giant chunks. At $19.99 for 22 pounds it may be pricey but
superior to B&B by far.

Shipping could be an issue, but prices are as low as $5.25/11# bag.

I'm in the midst of using my first bag of Wicked Good. (I bought
three bags while in Maine a few weeks ago.) I even got a MAPP gas
torch to light it. It seems pretty good so far, but what I've been
burning so far gives off quite a few embers. Not quite as many embers
as the mesquite charcoal I used to get in California 25 years ago, but
more than I'd like.

Although not Royal Oak, People's Woods / Nature's Own out of Warwick,
RI sells Nature's Own lump for a about $10.50 a bag. They have great
wood chuncks also. A few years ago I bought a bag of alder and most of
the pieces are about the size of a fist. On the South Shore, in
Plymouth, Wood Ventures sells Royal Oak.

Sparking lump is purely related to it's humidity. After a lot of rain my
lump sparks pretty hard, especially during start up in the chimney. During
the summer and no rains there's hardly a spark to be seen. I suspect Maine
doesn't get too many months without any rain, so you're gonna see sparks all
year, except maybe snow season if the air is dry.

Nature's Own used to be all around and now I can't find it. I used
to drive to their store and pick up 10 or more bags at a time, but
have been trying to avoid that as it's not a fun drive. I am going
to try the Wicked Good as they've got it right down the street. My
wife picked me up two bags of B&B yesterday though, so I'll have
to use that first. It was only $15 for a 20 lb. bag, but of course
that's not a bargain if the stuff sucks. Thanks to all for their
help.

Hey Kyle....Where did you find the B&B?

My wife picked me up 2 bags of B&B at the Hearth & Home store in
Hampton Falls. I am using the first bag and don't like the giant
sizes of the chunks. I can only get two in a chimney! So I took
the other one back to see what else they had. Well to my surprise
they had Wicked Good and at just $14.95 a bag. Yesterday I opened
one up. This stuff was *very* difficult to light in the chimney
(it took 8 or 9 pieces of newspaper compared to the normal 2 or 3)
and was horribly hard to get going and stay going. I found myself
having to blow on the charcoal in my WSM. I can't believe this is
normal for Wicked Good. It was a brand new bag, so I wouldn't think
it was damp. It all "seemed" dry.

Yes, Wicked Good can be hard to light. I found a recommendation
somewhere on the net that you use MAPP gas to light it. I bought a
MAPP gas torch, and I find that if I pile up the Wicked Good, light
the bottom of the pile with the torch, and hit it with air from a
bellows every few minutes, it will burn very nicely. I've had no
problem keep it lit once it gets going.

That is a great way to do it, Thomas. If he has a gas burner outside, like
a turkey fryer or a gas grill with a side burner, he can set the chimney on
it as well.

B&B is an excellent charcoal as well --- and I believe TNW was favorable in
his review of it as well --- so I would grab up some B&B and just break it
into smaller pieces.
