Barbecued Burgers

Yield: about 6

* 1 pound ground beef
* 2 large onions, chopped
* 1/2 cup diced celery
* 1 cup sliced mushrooms
* 2 tablespoons shortening
* 1/4 cup ketchup
* 1 cup tomatoes
* 1 cup water
* 1 teaspoon chili powder (or more to taste)
* salt and pepper to taste
* 2 tablespoons minute tapioca

Fry ground beef, onions, celery, and mushrooms in hot shortening until
brown. Add ketchup, tomato, water, and seasonings. Cover and simmer 15
minutes. Add tapioca and cook until slightly thick. Split soft rolls and
brown in frying pan. To serve, surround bowl of burger mixture with
pan-toasted rolls.
