Default Hevelius Kaper?

I recently spent a month in Poland with a friend, and we both got very
attached to Hevelius Kaper. I'd like to get her some for Christmas. Any
idea if/whether I can mail-order it here in the States?

Thanks. k

I've bought it in the States, in Chicago at a corner store near a Polish
neighborhood. IIRC, it's imported locally by a small company that just
imports a few Polish beers. I don't think it's the kind of thing that you
could get through one of the mail order sites; more of a specialty thing
for Polish guys wanting a taste of the old country.

For a similar beer that's easier to find, maybe check out Samichlaus or
Bezlebuth. A couple other examples of obscenely strong lagers that throw a
few fusels. But can you get _anything_ in NC that's over 5% abv?

Thanks for the URL. The site claims to be "temporarily closed in order to
update all information." I hope that's just for the short term.

There seem to be a few hints that Amtec sells only to retailers and
pub owners, not to private individuals.

Also noted with some trepidation that the site lists Hevelius Kaper as
6.8% ABV instead of the 9.1% I'd thought it was. We're more interested in
the flavor and the memories of Poland than the high alcohol content, but
with such a big difference, I fear they may simply have the wrong beer.

I was planning on having it shipped directly to California, where my
friend lives. Would that work if the order was sent from NC? I'm all too
aware of the restrictive beer laws here -- missing my Chimay as the
weather starts to cool down.

Thanks again for your help.

Hevelius Kaper was once a nice strong lager, indeed. Now it has lost
much of its character.

- Kaper was originally brewed in Gdansk (Danzig)
- Danziger brewery was closed down a couple years ago by Elbrewery (now
a Zywiec Group / Heineken subsidiary).
- now, Kaper along with other "brands", are brewed (ehm rather:
produced) in Elblag

p.s. here in Poland, the alcohol content shown on the label is not
exact ABV value, it is a maximum ABV that a beer of this kind can
reach, so the ABV of the Hevelius Kaper may be a little lower as
stated.
