I will be in Costa Mesa on business for the next two weeks. I know
that the Goat Hill Tavern and Yard Works are there. Any comments on
those two establishments? Does Goat Hill have a food menu, or is it
just beer? Not that there's anything wrong with that. Any other
suggestions for a meal with good beer in that area?

Thanks

Goat Hill has hot dogs -- no pub food or anything like that -- lots of
taps but actually not all that impressive -- lots of taps wasted on
budmilloors.

You should definitely look for High Times Liqours and visit them for
bottled beer -- very impressive liquor store.

If you have time on the weekend come down to San Diego and find O'Brien's
Pub at the SW corner of Convoy and Opportunity. Great place -- excellent
food and always a selection of 20 or more of the finest craft brews you
can find along with a great bottle selection and friendly beer geeks at
damn near every table. People bring their own homebrew to share as well
so you never know what you're going to run into.

Yard House.

Goat Hill's a bit more old-school neighborhood bar. Yard House is more
yuppie hangout (depending on how perjoratively you view that term, it's not
that bad). Both have big beer lists, with a lot of crap mixed in with good.
Tough to go terribly wrong either way. And they're literally across the
street (well, 8-lane highway) from each other.

Not really. Yard House has pretty good food.

Newport Beach Brewing Co. is down the same road a few miles. Nice enough
beer (rather good, if cloudy IIPA), good pub food. The Rock Bottom in Irvine
is actually a very good one. So's the Gordon-Biersch in Laguna Hills (about
10 and 15 miles from Costa Mesa, just down the 405 and 5). There's a
Steelhead over by UC-Irvine.

And if you want to pick up bottles, go to Hi Time in Costa Mesa. Very good
selection.
