Chocolate Stout??? What's it like?
 
I saw something (if I remember correctly) a "Double Chocolate Stout". Is
this a potent intense brew like Guinness or a softer maltier type of
dark tipple? Thanks, Carl

After Malvern Hill Pres. Lincoln visited with Gens. Mc Clellen & Sumner
as well as Col. Nugent (Commander of the Irish Brigade.)` A Lt. James.
M. Birmingham, Adjutant of the 88th N. Y. came from a swim in the James
R. & with his underwear drying on his body saw them talking. He ducked
behind some cover to eavesdrop in time to see & hear Pres. Lincoln
(overcome with emotion at the bravery & sacrifice of the Irish Brigade.)
as he lifted a corner of the 69th N. Y.'s flag, kissed it & said "God

"A dark, ruby coloured stout, almost black from a distance. A distinctive
chocolate flavour with a smooth and velvety finish.
Pale ale malt, crystal malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt, special blend
of sugars, Fuggles and Goldings hops, real dark chocolate and chocolate
essence. Melted chocolate bars are added to the boil and the essence is
added after filtration. " 5.0% ABV.

The effect can be astounding. I have had people remark that it tastes "like
a Guinness with a shot of Hershey's syrup!" It is IMO the best of the
"chocolate beers" out there, of the ones actually trying to have any
chocolate flavour.

Well, Guinness* ISN'T "potent" at all, if you're talking about alcohol
content- it comes in at just a bit above 4% alcohol by volume, less
potent than the bland lagers from Budweiser and Miller. While it may be
"intense" to some, a roasted flavor (like extreme hoppiness) does not
mean the beer is necessarily "strong" or "potent".

*If by Guinness you mean draft Guinness or the nitro canned/bottled
stuff. If you mean Extra Stout, even it comes in at around 6%- not
especially strong in this era of imperial stouts and ipa's and
barleywines.

Yeah, it's surprisingly drinkyble... I only ever had one that was
better, and it was a small run by Brasserie de la Soif in Nantes,
France, which had a nice soft porter character with just the right
amount of cocoa, and no vanilla (unlike the Young's one)

Extra stout seems to come in various strengths depending on the Market,
more like 8% I thought, must look in my local ethnic offie.

Don't judge without having tried it. I do not like sweet drinks at all. And
the Young's Double Chocolate is an outstanding beer.

I grew up in a household with a juvenile diabetic sister. We never had any
sweets so as not to entice her and thus, I've never had much desire for any
sweet concoctions. I find chocolate -- texture and flavor -- not much to my
liking either. However, the idea of introducing Hershey's syrup to a pint
of Guinness is -- whether one loves or loathes chocolate -- to be disgust-
ing.

Hmm, being a lover of high cocoa percentage, very dark chocolates, be
they German, Belgian or French (some even make sugar-free chocolate at
99% cocoa or so), the idea of Hershey's syrup in beer sounds awful
indeed (too much vanilla, not enough cocoa)... but here we'd be talking
of disgusting stuff like Huyghe's Floris Chocolat.
Young's is drinkable enough to my taste, but it's bit too vanilla-ish,
as it's meant for Brit palates used to Cadbury's Dairy Milk (20% cocoa,
20% milk, 60% sugar, bleuargh), whereas something meant for grown-up
french or belgian tastebuds used to very dark stuff, with a nice bitter
edge from the cocoa, would be *just sumptuous* !

That it does. I was going by the stuff we get in the US (which is not
even from Ireland but brewed by Labatt in Canada) which is where I took
the original poster to be from.

Most beer in the US is still not labeled for alcohol content (not that I
have a bottle of GES around) and took my figures from US editions of
Michael Jackson's books.

You might want to try the Rogue Chocolate Stout. It tastes alot like the
Shakespheare Stout with a touch of chocolate, but not so much that it
overwhelms the rest of the flavors. Outstanding beer.

I really didn't like the Youngs as is was a little thin and sweet for my
tastes.
