Bellingham, WA best brewery/beer bar?

I'm taking my husband to a play (Murder By Poe) next weekend in
Bellingham, WA. We need good food and excellent beer to kick the night
off...

So, Boundary Bay, Orchard Street, or Chuckanut Bay Brewing? Or is
there a beer bar that's going to blow those places out of the water
with it's awesome selection, great food, and excellent ambiance?

TIA!

Since Orchard Street no longer operates their (former) pub-restaurant,
that simplifies your choices. I'd go for Boundary Bay. Haven't yet
been up to check out Chuckanut Bay Brewing. (Not to mention the
Porterhosue in Mount Vernon. Too busy with buying and moving into
new home.)

Beer bar? Oh yeah. The Archer Ale House in Fairhaven, at 1212 10th
Street. Superb.

Knowing your exquisite tastes, I'll take your word for it. Thanks!

That's been well-noted, by me, your favorite Skagitonian beer-swilling

I think that one's even closer to the Mount Baker Theatre. Stumbling
distance, perhaps.

Should have known it'd be you to refer me. :P

Yep. One within a five-minute walk, one less than a mile
away, one a bit farther than a mile away.

Me? Lift? You kwayzee, man.

Except, of course, for my personal stash of beer, and my

The house IPA and the Scotch ale are good. Maybe the Pilsner.
Maybe Cabin Fever is still around. Decent eats, not expensive.

Weekends have been sucked up with packing for the move. Free time?
Whazzat?

If you get out to Chuckanut Bay Brewing, please let me know how it is.
Or post here for all to know.

New digs are in West Seattle. Three good places not far from the new
manse, and it's still no problem to get into town for beer-drinkin'
elsewhere. If you haven't been to the Beveridge Place Pub yet, it
rocks. Great selection, friendly owners.

We're hiring movers for the heavy lifting. A strong back is a
terrible thing to waste. I'll take care of vital items, like the
beer glasses and the stereo.

Better yet, lift with someone else's legs that you hire to do the job while
you sit and drink beer.

Their website says the current seasonals are a dry Irish stout on
nitro, Old Bounder barleywine (woohoo!), and Dunkels Bock. Hopefully
I'll have the stamina to try them all. :)

Pffft. I'm up to 3 jobs now, not for the money but for the love of my
cold-blooded friends. I'm travelling 120 miles round-trip once a week
for the 3rd job, just for a few hours work at a reptile breeding
facility. Haven't had a day off in over 2 months. There's still time
for beer and Usenet, though!

I avoid West Seattle, to be honest. I used to drink out there at this
horrible, horrible dive... "the Firedog". Too many lemondrops and
videos of me & the girls on the karaoke stage. Haven't been back to
West Seattle in oh, 7 years.

I might bend my rules, for you.

Verging on snobbery. You're either too wealthy or too old when you're
hiring movers. :P

I had a second recommendation for that place from one of my employees
last night... I like the kid, he's got decent taste in beer and throws
freight as if I were cracking the whip over him. Also he calls me
"boss-lady". I like that.

You should. The Elliott Bay Brewing Company is a five-minute walk
from the crib. The Beveridge Place Pub is a five-minute drive (if
that much; it's about 3/4 of a mile away). I promise not to go to
any horrible, horrible dives. I just completed an excellent birth-
day brain-pickling session on Friday; the Beveridge Place Pub was last
on the route. Fun time.

Had the WWS for the first time at the Brickskellar about three years ago
- unbelievable. For those near LA, the WWS is available at Morry's of
Naples in Long Beach at $8.95 a bottle. Not sure if High Times has it.
commasteve? If someone could clue me in to a better price locally, I'd
be most grateful.

Sometimes I think the $9/12oz is part of the allure, then I spring for
another bottle and find myself corrected. It would be a helluva thing
to see this beer in the making. The fact that it can hold a head (for
awhile, at least) in the face of so much alcohol is an achievement unto
itself. Unlike DGS, this beer sucks not.

That doesn't sound like too bad a price, really, considering you're on
the other side of the country. I'm in New Jersey where, because of the
different way beer's sold in both states, PA beers are often cheaper
than in PA (especially for less than case quantities). WWS is usually
around $8 a single here (don't think I've ever seen a case price <g>).
By comparision, HopDevil & Prima Pils are usually in the $7-8 a sixpack;
I pay about $25 a case for them in a discount liquor store.

It isn't much better as you travel up the coast. Maybe a buck less
(retail) in Seattle; I haven't priced it lately.

You did well to find it at the Brick, though. First choice? The place
drives me nuts, because it seems nearly inevitable that they'll be out
of your first choice, and you'll have to scan the beer coolers to find
something they actually have.

Jesus Christ. My one refuge on this earth free of you, and now you're
tromping around in it.

Good to see you back slumming with the rest of us.

No dice on the WWS at Hi-Time. Not sure why. Keep forgetting to chat with
one of the beer buyers whenever I'm there to ask why.

Rochefort 8 has shown up there, however, after years of selling only the 10.
That's reason enough to keep me happy. I will have to make a detour to
Naples one of these days, though.

As a matter of fact, got lucky on that one. As I remember, I had
consulted with Atkins Jackson re tasty bevies I might find there
and not here. "World Wide Stout" was the first thing out of his
maw.

We came to learn that it was basically a coin toss whether or not
the server would come back shortly after ordering. OTOH, we were
in DC for a week, and this was the only place we went to three
times. We found the service and the food to be good. Also, the
opportunity to do things like vertical Thomas Hardy was new to me,
so I was willing to put up with repeated "Sorry, but..." We're
thinking about going back this year, and one of the attractions,
frankly, is the Brickskeller. The other is the Udvar-Hazy, but
that's another ng...

If only I could afford it. So far we've bought two bottles, and both
were stunning. Here's hoping we either get significant pay increases
for our worthy efforts or the price of beer in the PNW drops
dramatically.

Wine tonight, a lovely 2000 Merlot from one of the locals. The
housemate drank the last beer. That's the problem with pooling beer
amongst a bunch of micro-lovers. By the time I get off, the most
delectable juices have already been savored.

WWS is still prohibitively expensive here 60 miles north of Seattle -
$11.99/bottle at the big-name grocery. My punishment for living in a
rural farming community, I suppose. The chicory stout is only $9.99/6.
Hah, I said ONLY!

Hey. I'll be handling the representation of the fairer sex around
here. As such, I'll point out that DGS holds doors, kisses hands and
cheeks with utmost sincerity, and never condescends when spewing beer
wisdom in public hophead-houses. He's positively charming, and I'd
drink with him anytime. Not to mention his fair lady!

WRT the Bellingham trip... I suprised my husband by walking the 6
blocks (in teensy strappy very high heels!) to Boundary Bay Brewing,
and it was fan-tabulous. I had the best meal I've been served in a
restaurant in years (chicken breasts stuffed with feta cheese served
in a coriander & mandarin orange cream sauce), and the IPA was to die
for. Smooth, hoppier than hell, and so complex I had to consume 3
pints to understand the beer fully. Their barleywine was too sweet,
the dry Irish stout had a NASTY finish, and they were out of the bock.
I'll certainly return; the service was attentive and demure and scored
a smooth $20 from us.

We hit "Nimbus" after the play for drinks and dessert... I had some
type of orange muscat that was exquisite with my flourless chocolate
torte. mmmmmf.

But of course. I decided to quote Stephen King in a recent blog entry,
