Strange but true. I was prowling the local liquor store at the behest
of my lovely wife, looking for a porter. And there they were, four lovely big bottles of the stuff. And only $2.50 a bottle so I bought them all. It is true, there are more combinations of beer in heaven and earth than I have dreamed of, and I have tried a LOT of beer. Okocim porter is so malty, so chocolately and so unique because I kept expecting that vinous note from the yeast that I always seem to get from beers like this. I suppose it is the lager yeast used that keeps those tastes at bay. The malt itself was rasiny and chewy. And I gotta say "chewy" as an adjective to describe malt is way overused IMO. Paulaner Salvator malt is not chewy, Yeti Imperial Stout is not chewy - Okocim Porter is CHEWY! It was pretty sweet and I didn't think the 8.3 alcohol was hidden very well, but it was nice and warming and complimentary to that massive rasin malt. If it stays around, it will definitely become a regular treat. _Randal |

(And a big round of applause for those sad b*stards at Carlsberg International, please...) I'm due to visit the Okocim Brewery some time in the Autumn, I'll enquire further. Looks like the "optimisation" of breweries' beers portfolios in Poland is turning out to be pretty lethal for polish porters... Last June, as I went hunting for "Piwo Porter" across Warsaw, I had to ask at a dozen offies and delis to finally find two that stocked Ciechanow (33cl bottles) and/or Lodzkie (50cl cans, ouch), one of them about 100m north of the Constitution Square. And then I came across Zywiec Porter (33cl bottles) at a petrol station somewhere along the way to the Warsaw Uprising Museum. That place had the best range of beer I'd seen in four days in Warsaw... Turned out the entrance to Browar Warschawskie (ie. the "Krolewskie" plant) is nearby... but said petrol station didn't stock any ! Cheers ! ![]() Hello baltic-porter fans! Okocim is brewing their Porter again, ufortunately only for export (it's not available in Poland) :/ Laurent, Browary Warszawskie no longer exist as well as their essentional Porter (i still have some bottles in my cellar). All thanks to Heineken/BBAG. Another thing is that Zywiec Porter is not brewed in Zywiec anymore but in Cieszyn under the same name (they also brew a nice regional lager - Brackie). A list of porters in Poland to look for is: Krajan - Porter Ciechanow - Porter Staropolskie - Porter BOSS - Porter all above approx 18 BLG (Cieszyn) - Zywiec Porter Lodzkie - Porter Strzelec/Brok, Porter all above approx 22 BLG And also Okocim Porter, that Carlsberg decided to keep away from Polish porter drinkers :/ BTW, if someone travelling to Poland will need some info on Polish beer - please let me know, I'll try to help. cheers! art [at] browar.biz -- ART Browar.biz - Polski Serwis Piwny: http://www.browar.biz/ |

I live in Greenpoint, Brooklyn which has a large Polish
community. I see the Zywiec Porter and Boss Porter (called Black Boss) all over the place here, in little bodega grocery stores, though never in bars. A few years back, in addition to the Okocim Porter (which I still haven't seen return here in NY) there was also Dojlidy Porter, which I also remember as being quite good. Is that also no longer being made? The list of porters i mentioned earlier is a complete one (sigh). at least for now. Cheers! art [at] browar.biz -- ART Browar.biz - Polski Serwis Piwny: http://www.browar.biz/ |

Well, I'll keep looking around for some old bottles. In my experience this stuff ages very well! I once had a bottle of Okocim porter that was at least 20 years old and it was great... Bill > |

I still have a bottle of a superb Polish porter from Wroclaw - Piast Porter (the botlle is over 5 or 6 yrs old now). In my cellar is also to find some porters from Warsaw, Bia³ystok and the original porter from the ¯ywiec brewery as well as some of the more fresh ones brewed in Poland. cheers! art [at] browar.biz -- ART Browar.biz - Polski Serwis Piwny: http://www.browar.biz/ |

The Porter had a very nice maple/walnut edge in its chocolaty maltiness, and that really made it a unique beer ! -- Warning : you may encounter French language beyond this point. I haven't found their Porter, but I've seen bottles of the Dojily Magnat
around the corner from my house. I'll have to check it out.
